Recycling discrepancies costing rate payers £348k

NON-RECYCLING households across the district are putting an unnecessary and avoidable burden on rate-payers, an Environment Committee at Strabane District Council has heard.

Addressing members on Tuesday night past, chief technical officer at the council, Malcolm Scott revealed that the combined cost of landfilling material which could otherwise be recycled and sold, has now reached £348,000.

In his report, Mr Scott showed how following an inspection of material in household black bins by employees assigned from the Parks and Cemeteries squad, it was discovered around a quarter of all people are still not segregating recyclable material to the blue bin.
