A MAJOR Irish language festival is to make its way to Strabane for the first time next month.

The ‘Rith’ festival takes place from March 8 until St Patrick’s Day and is aimed at celebrating the Irish language and culture in a fun, community based way.

One strand of the nine day celebration is a 1,000km relay race, running from morning to night. The run begins in Gweedore before making its way through 15 counties and finishing on the Aran Islands. For the first time, the Rith 2012 marathon effort will snake its way through Strabane.

Several local schools and sporting organisations have already signed up to take part in the run. But principal of Strabane’s Gaelscoil, Máire Ní Dhochartaigh, is encouraging the entire community to get involved.
