Dismay expressed at dilapidated state of old Academy building

AHEAD of its sale, the owners of the listed Strabane Academy building have expressed dismay at the state the historic schoolhouse has been allowed to fall into.

While owned by the Duke of Abercorn, the building was transferred to the trustees of Strabane Academy under a 900 year lease in 1882.

It was subsequently passed to the North West Institute of Further Education College in 1998 who used up until last year. Since January 2011, the building has been practically abandoned.

It has now emerged that the former school building is to be sold off. Baronscourt Estate are currently in negotiations over the surrender of the 900 year lease with the education authorities.

But on Tuesday, Robert Scott of Baronscourt Estate expressed dismay at the state the historic building had been allowed to fall into.
