A STRABANE search and rescue volunteer will get to taste a little Olympic magic later this year after being named as an official torchbearer.
Noel McGillian will carry the torch on June 5 when it travels from Derry to Newry. He was chosen out of 28,000 nominations due to his 17 years of volunteering with the Northwest Mountain Rescue Team.
Speaking this week, the civil servant said he was looking forward to taking part in the once in a lifetime run. “I was nominated because of my involvement with the Northwest Mountain Rescue team where I have been volunteering for the past 17 years.
“It’s a bit of a pat on the back for me personally but it’s also an opportunity to increase the profile of the team.
“Northwest Mountain Rescue is only partly funded by central government so as the profile goes up, the chance of drawing down more money rises too,” Noel said.
