North Tyrone clubs set for start of league action

CLUBS in Division Three of the All-County League will be the first to taste competitive action for the 2012 season when the opening round of fixtures takes place over the coming days.

Junior football can be extremely difficult to negotiate as each of the 17 teams harbour individual hopes of gaining promotion. The coming months are expected to be no different as the battle for points gathers pace.

Among the sides who have experienced Intermediate football during the past number of years are Newtownstewart. Not surprisingly, then, the St Eugene’s are keen to make their mark and have a derby clash against Castlederg to get them going.

Team manager, Vincent Gallagher, has no doubts about what will be demanded from the players ahead of what should be a whole series of intriguing tussles.

“Our match against Castlederg is a big derby one for us, and the fact that we’re at home probably means that the pressure is on to get a good start,” he said.

“While they haven’t been setting Division Three alight during recent years, they’ve a new pitch opened and are going to be difficult opponents.”
