Warning over Moorlough algae hazard

GLENMORNAN beauty spot, Moorlough is closed to the public following fears about a dangerous algal bloom on the lake.

Potentially hazardous to swimmers, fishermen and anyone who might enter the lake on a recreational basis, the algae is currently the focus of investigation by the Department of the Environment.

Strabane District Council issued a public health warning on Friday, but some fear this is inadequate as many families flocked to the local lough during the weekend’s heatwave unaware of the potential danger.

“I first alerted the chief environmental health officer of Strabane District Council about the presence of potentially harmful blue/green algal bloom at Moorlough on April 17,” Sinn Féin’s Dan Kelly said.
