Emergency services scrambled following missing persons report
A STRABANE man who sparked a six hour search after claiming he had fallen into a swamp could be prosecuted for wasting police time.
Shortly after 5.30pm on Saturday, police received a call from a man claiming he had fallen and hurt his ankle while hiking in the Glen.
A High Risk Missing Persons operation was launched involving a police helicopter, the Ambulance Service, a PSNI search team and North West Mountain Rescue volunteers.
Several sweeps of the Glen area were carried out but nothing was found. The search was called off after six hours when the man turned up safe and well at his sister’s house.
Police said this week that there had been genuine concern for the man and that officers became increasingly worried when they were unable to ring him back on his mobile phone.
