Former Castlederg rivals amalgamate

OFFICIALLY it’s a name change; unofficially once sworn enemies Churchtown and cross-town rivals Barrowfield have completed an amalgamation.

And the new name will be St Patrick’s FC, which was ratified at a meeting of officials from both Castlederg clubs on Tuesday evening, called to iron out the finer details of the new entity.

Barrowfield, who were suspended from the Fermanagh and Western League for playing players under assumed names the season before last had already submitted an application to a re-join Division Three in the coming season.

Rumours of a possible merger between the Derg clubs have raised their head on a number of occasions in recent years but news that Barrowfield had submitted an application to return to the ranks of the Fermanagh and Western focused minds of those promoting the joining of forces.

Discussions between the former rivals took place last week and by Friday the merger had been given the green light.
