PERFORMING on the same bill as The Stone Roses and Florence and the Machine is the stuff of dreams for most rising stars.
“It’s pretty sweet”, is how Strabane rapper Gerard i2 summed it up after learning he would be doing just that.
Gerard has been named as the winner of this year’s Tennents Untapped, an initiative aimed at unearthing the best up and coming music talent in Northern Ireland. He beat off competition from 250 other acts to secure one of the top prizes in Ireland and the biggest opportunity of his life.
On August 22 he will join some of the world’s most famous bands at the two day Tennents Vital festival in Belfast. Among those also taking part are the Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, The Minutes, the Stone Roses, Florence and the Machine and Rodrigo Y Gabriela. And now Strabane’s very own Gerard i2.
Speaking after hearing the news, a starstruck Gerard was almost lost for words.
“I didn’t think I had a chance of getting into the competition nevermind winning it. So it’s pretty sweet alright.
“Ive been freaking out since they rang me on Tuesday and I would need to get some practice in. It’s probably the biggest gig I’ll ever play in my life and I’m all over the show since I found out.
“It’s pretty alright that I got through and I want to keep the ball rolling on it. It’s not the kind of opportunity you get too often and you never know what could come out of it,” he said.
