TRADE union NIPSA has called for plans to relocate dozens of jobs away from Strabane’s Social Security Office to be reversed.
Union members met with MP Pat Doherty and other politicians on Tuesday to discuss the unfolding situation.
Speaking to the Strabane Chronicle, local NIPSA activist Ann Coyle said the plans were a far cry from what is actually needed on the ground.
She said, “Workers and the unemployed will no doubt be angry by what is an unworkable proposal to downgrade Strabane’s Social Security Office to a ‘front office only service’ in September.
“There are concerns for the workers in the office, benefit claimants and indeed the wider society in Strabane.
“To move away from benefit claimants having face-to-face contact with workers at the local Social Security Office flies in the face of what is required in reality and what benefit recipients truly require.”
