‘Sham wedding’ arrests were unlawful rules Ombudsman

A STRABANE groom whose wedding day was ruined by a PSNI blunder says he has lost all confidence in the police.

The Police Ombudsman this week ruled that last July’s arrest and detention of local chef Neil McElwee and his wife Yanan Sun were unlawful.

Police interrupted the ceremony at Derry’s Guildhall of Neil and his then pregnant fiancee Yanan, wrongly believing it to be a sham wedding.

The couple were detained for five hours as background checks were carried out. They were only released following intervention by solicitor and Sinn Féin councillor Karina Carlin.
After the PSNI bungle, a formal complaint was made to the Police Ombudsman and they have now ruled that the arrests and detention were illegal.

Despite the ruling though, Neil told the Strabane Chronicle this week that he has lost all confidence in the PSNI.
