Campaigning Cecelia’s battle comes to an end
A CANCER sufferer who had her benefits cut by officials who said she was fit to work, has died.
Cecelia Burns (51) from Strabane, who had undertaken a campaign since last February to have this decision reversed, passed away on Monday following a series of complications. She had been in Altnagelvin Hospital at the time.
Mrs Burns had been undergoing bouts of chemo and radiotherapy since May of last year, following an operation for her illness.
But in February past she was called by the benefits office for a medical board. The former office administrator was subsequently informed that her Employment and Support Allowance was being cut substantially because she was “capable of work”.
This decision had only been overturned last month. She had been due to have all her benefits backdated.
