POLICE are to re-examine the case of a Strabane teenager whose body was found floating in the River Mourne almost four decades ago.
Denise O’Donnell was 19 when her bruised and injured body was discovered in the river on November 21 1976.
Miss O’Donnell, a sister of the late Sinn Féin councillor Ivan Barr, had been to a dance in Letterkenny the night she died.
While the official coroner’s verdict recorded the cause of death as drowning, the Barr family have always suspected foul play. They also maintain that the RUC failed to fully investigate the case properly, brushing over details which could have helped identify their sister’s killer.
This week the family declined to comment however the PSNI has confirmed to the Strabane Chronicle that they are now re-examining a case which shocked an entire community. It is understood a 60 page dossier surrounding the 36-year-old case will be central to any new probe
