DOUBLE killer John Gallagher is to face criminal charges after handing himself in following 12 years on the run.
The State is pursuing criminal charges against the Lifford man who was released from the Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum in May.
It has now been reported Gallagher is to appear in court in October to face charges of absconding while on temporary release from the CMH.
If convicted Gallagher could face six months in prison or a fine.
The father of two was formally notified of the charges in early July when gardai arrived at the home of a relative to deliver a summons ordering him to appear at Dun Laoghaire court.
Gallagher, killed Anne Gillespie (22) and her mother Annie (51) in the grounds of Sligo General Hospital in 1988.
The following year he was found ‘guilty, but insane’ after his barrister argued Gallagher had been taking massive doses of slimming tablets.
