Newtownstewart woman jailed over £19,000 benefit fraud
A LOCAL woman has been convicted at Omagh Crown Court of claiming benefits she was not entitled to.
Gail Magee (41) of Barleyhill View, Newtownstewart claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £19,391 while failing to declare she was living with her partner. She was given a nine month prison sentence suspended for two years.
She will also have to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
A Social Security Agency spokesperson said, “The Agency cannot discuss the details of individual cases, however, those who deliberately commit benefit fraud are dipping their fingers into the pockets of Northern Ireland’s taxpayers.
“The SSA is committed to rooting out fraudsters. Through different anti-fraud measures, and with the public’s help, the Agency will carry on reducing fraud, make it more difficult to commit and if it occurs, detect it and punish the fraudsters.”
