Strabane’s female boxers and the ‘The Katie Taylor Effect’

PUT UP YOUR DUKES… Local female boxers Caroline Connolly, Raphoe ABC, Emma McGlynn, Lisnafin ABC and Tammy-Lee Diver, Immaculata ABC talk about the burgeoning popularity of female boxing.

THE ranks of local women’s boxing have been swelling since last week’s heroics by Irish Olympic star Katie Taylor.
Across Ireland too clubs have been reporting a surge in interest from young females, all hoping to emulate the Bray women’s gold medal performance.

Unlike many other towns though Strabane has long had a healthy women’s boxing scene. Young stars like 17-year-old Emma McGlynn and 16-year-old Tammi Lee Diver  along with veteran Caroline Connolly (33) have been flying the flag across Ireland for Strabane for several years.

Among them the girls have amassed close to 20 Irish and Ulster titles, putting opponents to the canvas across the country, the UK and mainland Europe.

This week the thumping trio spoke to the Strabane Chronicle about their experiences and the ‘Katie Taylor Effect’ that has young women everywhere pulling on the gloves.
