JUNE 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the grand opening of the MediCare Health and Beauty Store at 67 Main Street Strabane – doesn’t time fly?

As part of a general review of their business in the early part of 2004 MediCare Pharmacy Group made the strategic decision to expand their existing business in Strabane.

Their initial experience in the town, following their acquisition of two existing pharmacies and a small health and beauty/one-hour photo store at Abercorn Square in 2001, proved positive. This resulted in the purchase of a new 3,000 sqft unit on the town’s Main Street. The unit was completely refitted and the result, after a significant six figure investment, was a modern health and beauty store with a state-of-the-art digital photo lab.

MediCare Pharmacy Group managing director Michael Guerin commented, “This was a major investment decision for the MediCare Pharmacy Group as we had a number of investment options to consider across the group at that time. However as a result of our initial experience in the town, in relation to the support of the local customers and the work ethic of our staff, we were confident that there was the potential to further grow our business in the local area. I have to say we have had no regrets, and in fact we recently added to our presence in Strabane by opening second health and beauty store the new Pavilion retail centre in 2011”.

Local area retail manager, Johnny McGonagle recalled, “This was truly a wonderful memory and fantastic journey for me personally. At the time I was the manager of the health and beauty store at Abercorn Square, having worked for the previous owners before being acquired by MediCare. I can clearly recall the move from the 600 square foot unit Castle Street to the new 3,000 square foot store. I remember thinking at the time that the new unit was huge and I suppose it was considering what I was used to.

“Being local I just knew that the investment in a bigger site would be a success and with my promotion to area manager for the group another local, with a wealth of retailing experience in the town, Margaret Millar, joined us as the new branch manager. In our first year we doubled the turnover on the old shop and in year two we hit our first company target which was one of the best years for me working in Strabane. I have no doubt that this was down to a number of significant factors – committed and motivated staff, loyal support from our customers and a reputation for our service, value for money offers and an extensive product range. I was always proud representing the team at management meetings at our head office in Belfast knowing that the Main Street business was the best retail store in the company and it was in Strabane, west of the Bann”!

Store manager, Margaret Millar added, “Yes I agree with Johnny, this was an exciting time for us all and really our enthusiasm hasn’t diminished. Today we still believe in the simple principle of giving your customer products and services that they want at the best value. It all comes down to customer service really. Without that you don’t have customers and without customers, you don’t have a business. We try not to become complacent and strive to exceed our customers’ expectations every time. It has been a very enjoyable 10 years – which has passed in a blink. The development of this shop employing over 20 people was very much welcomed at that time by the local people and I remember the job application and interview numbers that we had to go through at the time to recruit staff, it was amazing”.

Today MediCare Pharmacy Group has five outlets in Strabane employing just over 50 people offering health and beauty products and digital photo printing as well as a valuable pharmacy service to the Strabane people and the wider area.

The five outlets comprise of;

Ballycolman Pharmacy, 340a Ballycolman Estate,

Mourne Pharmacy, 6a Beechmount Avenue,

Strabane Health Centre Pharmacy, Upper Main Street,

MediCare Health and Beauty, Main Street and

MediCare Health and Beauty, The Pavilion Retail Park, Railway Road.

MediCare Pharmacy at Mourne is also approaching its 10th anniversary this September. In the space of three months MediCare had invested millions of pounds relocating these businesses and creating much needed employment.

In 2008 MediCare acquired Ballycolman Pharmacy from local man, John Duffy who to this day is our pharmacy manager having stayed on and committing himself to the people of the Ballycolman. Most recently in 2011 MediCare opened its fifth business and satellite store to the Health and Beauty store, Main Street at The Pavilion Retail Park, Strabane.

To mark the occasion of our 10th Anniversary at MediCare Health and Beauty we have been running a weekly promotion campaign with unbelievable pricing on the latest branded products such as Clarins, Marc Jacobs, Paco Robanne, Yankee Candle, Gillette, Radox and many more branded products at fantastic prices.
