IN THE last few weeks Strabane Track Club athletes have been busy travelling to the various age groups in the Ulster Championships.
Once again Strabane athletes have shown that they place high in Ulster Track and Field athletics both in Juveniles and Seniors. This year so far the club have won 13 Ulster medals at various championships. The medal haul so far  is five golds, four silvers and four bronze.
Eleven year old Sarah Cawford travelled to Shercock, Co Cavan to take part in the Childrens games and the Ulster 12 and 13 Championships. Over nine hundred athletes turned up with some of the events having up to ten heats just to make the finals.
In the Girls U13 Shot, Sarah threw a personal best of 6 metres 85cm to finish sixth in a field of 20 athletes. In the Girls Javelin event it was a different story with Sarah throwing the javelin out to nearly 20 metres to win gold and lift the Ulster title.
The following week brothers Darryl and Gareth Crawford travelled to Antrim to take part in the Boys and Girls U16 and U17 Championships of Ulster. In the U16 Javelin, Gareth finished second, throwing 44 metres. Gareth featured in the Boys Triple Jump, finishing fourth.
This was an eye opener for Gareth as he had trouble with his run up and recorded a number of breaks on the board even though he was clearly jumping further than the rest of the competitors.
Big brother Darryl had a superb day, winning U17 Boy discus event. After this event Darryl turned his attentions to the shot put, adding gold throwing 11m 31cm with the 5kg shot. In the javelin Darryl threw 48 metres to take third place.
Darryl finished off the day with two golds and one bronze medal.
The club’s senior athletes travelled to Belfast to the new Mary Peters Track for the Ulster 18, 19, 20 and Senior Championships.
Twenty-five year old Daniel Mullen lifted the Mens Ulster Javelin title in a hard fought battle with club team mate, 24 year old Sean McBride.
Conditions were some of the worst ever seen with torrential downpours. Distances thrown were down, with both athletes throwing over 52 metres. Daniel won by 7cm in the Boys U18 javelin.
Adam Doherty launched the javelin out to 43 metres 54 cm to take third spot.
New member to the club, 17 year old Rebekah Creane went in the Girls U18 javelin, just missing a medal when she took fourth place.
In the Girls U18 discus Rebekah took second place for silver and making this her first Ulster medal won at any championships.
All the juvenile athletes will go forward to the National Championships in Tullamore, Co Offaly in July. The venue for the senior athletes will be Santry, Dublin. The club wishes all athletes well for the upcoming Championships.
