SION Swifts Ladies marked their NIWFA Premier League debut with a stunning victory over Cliftonville at Solitude on Wednesday evening.

Having completed a difficult pre-season schedule, Tony McGinley’s charges went into the league opener against the Reds in confident mood.

And five minutes into the second half the County Tyrone outfit drew first blood when Hannah Ward released striker Lauren  Brennan to scamper through and score.

The Reds responded almost immediately when Marissa Callaghan, despite being under pressure from a number of defenders, struck a half volley beyond Swifts net-minder Niamh Barr.

However nothing was going to spoil Swifts day and in the final moments Ward netted a precious winner after Tasmin McCarter’s initial shot came back off a post.

On Wednesday evening Sion host Linfield at Melvin, Kick off 7.30pm.
