ATHLETIC got their early season challenge back on track with a hard fought derby win over league leaders Ardstraw at Vaughan’s Holm on Saturday.
A first half strike by Sean Doherty ultimately proved decisive although there was little doubt that on this occasion the visitors were worthy winners.
Doherty struck on 28 minutes, the defender connecting with a driven corner by Aaron Porter to rifle an unstoppable shot past home net-minder Andrew Gailey.
It was a quality finish and it needed to be to beat Gailey, who had made a number of outstanding saves throughout the 90 plus minutes.
In the second half Strabane turned the screw with Gailey denying Conor Carlin, who also hit a post, and Gary Henderson.
Ardstraw threatened sporadically through Samuel McKelvey, Kristian Gibson and Robbie Godfrey but on the day Gary Simpson’s charges were second best.
