Shannon seals gold for Lifford Strabane AC in Athlone

Athletics-Lifford 2

LIFFORD Strabane AC athletes, their parents and coaches made the trip to Athlone to the National Juvenile Indoor Championships last weekend.

All athletes that competed over the course of the two days displayed fine performances. A tally of four medals were gained by club athletes, one gold, one silver and two bronze.  Three  local athletes who competed narrowly missed out on a podium position, placing fourth in their respective events.

The gold medal came from the ever consistent Shannon Craig (pictured above)  in the Girls U19 High Jump. Shannon jumped her way to victory with 1.65metres. Ashleigh McArdle’s jump of 1.30m in the Girls U12 High Jump resulted in a personal best for this young athlete and a deserving silver medal.

The first of the bronze medals came from Ross Henderson in the Boys U15 Shot Putt.  Alan McGinley, who has been unfortunate in previous events at middle distance, showed a glimpse of his true potential by taking third place in the Boys U19 1500m running 4:09.93, a mere .75 behind second spot and 1.62 second behind the overall winner.

All at Lifford Strabane AC would like to take this opportunity to thank the club coaches who have given so much of their time over the past number of months in preparation of their athletes for such events.  A special mention of appreciation to the parents for ensuring that their children are given every opportunity of success and participation in the sport, transporting the children to training and competitions throughout Ireland.

This Saturday will see Lifford Strabane athletes and coaches make their way for Day 3 of the National Juvenile Championships; while a number of the senior athletes will participate in The Spar Omagh Half Marathon starting at 11am & the 5K Fun Run commencing at 11:10am. Good luck to all.
