Strabane crowned the ‘gnome capital’ of North

Gnomes like the Bride and Groom figures have proved popular in Strabane.

Gnomes like the Bride and Groom figures have proved popular in Strabane.

STRABANE people are not known for standing still and just weeks after being named one of the most romantic towns in the North, they have now claimed the ‘gnome capital’ title.

That’s according to the retail giant Asda who say Strabane folk have snapped up more garden gnomes than any other town.

The supermarket chain launched its own range of giant garden gnomes last year and saw a whopping 400 per-cent increase in sales, thanks in part to the Strabane’s insatiable appetite for the not-so-little garden folk. Asda say the new giant-sized versions are more difficult to pinch.

Peter Beckett, Store Manager of Asda Strabane said, “Despite dividing opinion for decades, our new breed of garden gnomes sold fantastically well in Strabane and throughout the North West in 2016.

“We think it’s a nostalgia thing, combined with the fact the newer bigger incarnations look more friendly and relatable to modern life – and dare I say it, less tacky, too.”

Some of best-selling types of gnomes include Grandma Gnome, Fairy Gnome, Superhero Gnome and the old favourite Fishing Gnome.
