Police have detained a teenage driver after an officer was dragged and thrown from a car in Newtownstewart on Tuesday night.

The male police officer sustained a number of cuts and bruises to his head and body as a result of the incident.

He was hurt after PSNI on patrol in the town stopped a Honda car in the Mourne Park area at around 11pm.

As police spoke to the driver, he sped off, dragging one of officers along the road for a distance before he was thrown off.

Other officers on patrol in the area noted the car a short time later in the Old Castle Road area. It was forced to a stop and the suspect was arrested.

The 17-year-old remains in custody on Wednesday on suspicion of a number of motoring offences.
