TWO independent films, written and directed by Strabane men, have gone into pre-production.

‘Grapevines’ is the brainchild of amateur film-maker Chris Mullen and will be produced under the banner of Snowstorm Films.

‘Subject 16’ is the latest offering from Michael Lafferty who last year completed two other shorts, Troubled Mind and The Murder Game.

This week, Grapevines writer and director, Chris is encouraging anyone who’d like to get involved to come along to Dicey’s on Tuesday from 5pm for auditions. That call also goes out to potential crew members and even musicians who’d like to contribute to the soundtrack.

“What we’re doing here is the definition of independent film-making because we’re doing it for the love of the game,” Chris said.

“It’s going to be a short film, about 30 to 40 minutes long and hopefully filming will begin later in the summer. The film puts small town life under the microscope.”

With themes including vigilantism and key-board activism, Grapevines also looks at the dangers of modern technology and how rumours can spiral out of control via simple posts on social media.

Subject 16 is also looking at a summer shoot. Writer and director Michael Lafferty, says this time around his movie project will have a bigger budget and  special effects.

“I’ve written it already,” he explained. “It tells the story of a government weapon, a young adult girl who escapes from the confines of a government facility and goes on the run. The government then calls in a commando unit to bring her back. But the girl, Subject 16, has the power to conduct lightning from her very hands: Which makes her deadly.

“This then becomes a fight for survival where loyalties are called into question.”

Michael and Chris, who are helping produce each other’s films, also revealed that interest is already high for the forthcoming auditions.

“We put the word out a week ago and already, we’ve had a hell of a response,” Michael remarked.

Chris continued, “We’ve been inundated with people looking for auditions, two of whom had roles in the TV series, The Fall.”

Casting auditions for Grapevines takes place in Dicey Reilly’s on Tuesday from 5pm, with auditions for Subject 16 the following Monday also in Dicey’s at 5pm.
