Playgroup staff ‘gutted’ after break-in and theft

Clady Playgroup damage

STAFF at a Clady playgroup were left “gutted”last week after heartless thieves broke in and stole a tankful of heating oil.

On Friday morning staff arrived at Happy Faces Playgroup on the Bellspark Road only to discover the heating system wasn’t working. It didn’t take long to discover however, that part of the security fence surrounding the playgroup compound had been cut at some stage during the previous night (Thursday, April 27) and that their tank had been drained of oil.

“When they realised that the heating wasn’t working they went outside to find the fence cut and pushed in,” chairperson for Happy Faces, Donna McAnenny explained.
“They broke in then they cut pipes and took the oil.
“We had to send the children home. They had arrived and seen the fence.”

Ms McAnenny was at pains however to point out how the Clady community has rallied to the playgroup’s aid following the break-in and theft.
“People have been brilliant,” she said. “We’ve had people offering to donate oil. We had just done some fund-raising at Easter so we didn’t feel as though we could do any more, at the minute anyway. But people have been brilliant.”
She continued, “The tank was only filled a short time ago. We probably lost about £300 worth of oil.”

The chairperson believes yet more cost will come from the replacement fence.
“Because it was cut and pushed in, to me it looks as though it will have to be replaced,” she said.
“We were just all gutted, when we realised what had happened.
“£300 might not sound like a lot of money but even a couple of hundred pound is quite a lot for wee local playgroup.”
