In claiming the prestigious win the Powerhouse Sport man showed tactical nous way beyond his teenage years.

Having been in the original breakaway for the majority of the stage, the gifted teenager decided it would be wiser to drop back to the main field.

Two of the riders stayed clear and it looked like they would go all the way.

Ward, who was recently named in the Northern Ireland team to compete in the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, refused to panic though. He bided his time and attacked from the bunch to again catch the leading pair.

The former Ulster Herald Sports Personality monthly winner rode with them before jumping ahead to claim a fantastic stage win.
