The line-up for the first heat of this year’s Sounds Like Summer contest has been announced. Taking place on Friday July 28 at the Alley Theatre in Strabane, the first installment of SLS:17 will feature Brendan McLaughlin, Fergus O’Dalaigh, Fast Thursday, Not Today and Chloe Heatley.

Just for making it to this stage in the competition, each act will receive £100 for their achievement. Furthermore, if any of these acts go the whole way to the title, the winning act gets to spend time at a professional recording studio where they will professionally record their own original single. That will be followed by the chance to record a professional video under the guidance of the Pulse Centre.

So who are this year’s acts?

CHLOE HEATLY
Chloe is currently part of the Pulse Project, a singer/songwriter who also plays guitar and piano. She is also a regular at open mic nights at Bennigans and The Bowery.

NOT TODAY
Not Today are a four piece alternative rock band from Omagh. Formed in 2014, the band started as an acoustic project entitled UN>I where vocalist, rhythm guitarist Ayrton McGurgan and lead guitarist Darragh Kelly wrote a mass amount of original songs. With the addition of drummer Emily Pinkerton they decided to go electric where they were later joined by bassist Jason Gallagher. After a brief hiatus in 2017 the band are back with their brand new single Comedown set for release later this year.

FAST THURSDAY
Fast Thursday are a three-piece Irish punk/hard rock band from Strabane. They include Reece Nelson on guitar/vocals, Adam McGinley on bass guitar and vocals and Odhran McCrory on drums.

FERGUS O’DALAIGH
Co Leitrim aspiring musician Fergus is a singer songwriter who has recently supported Declan O’Rourke and Mick Blake at Stoney Woods Festival.

BRENDAN MCLAUGHLIN
Derry City Rapper/Hip Hop artist Brendan goes by the name The DizzFunktional BMC. He has been creating music for the past nine years with rhyming techniques including storytelling, punch lines and multi-syllable word schemes. Topics include social ills, substance abuse, political issue and party lifestyles. His material can be found on the North West Hip Hop page on Youtube and he is in the process of compiling his debut solo album and also a joint project with Shane Deane which is due for release by the end of the year.
