The Priests set for Strabane

Classical musical group The Priests will perform at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, September 28 in aid of the Church’s restoration fund.

A local priest has described an upcoming fund-raising event for one of Strabane’s most iconic churches as ‘a dream come true.’

This Autumn ‘The Priests’, a classical musical trio, will perform their first ever concert in Strabane in the beautiful surroundings of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The concert is in aid of the church’s restoration fund.

The internationally acclaimed group is made up of Fr Eugene O’Hagan and his younger brother Fr Martin O’Hagan, who are originally from the village of Claudy, County Derry and Father David Delargy from Ballymena, County Antrim.

All three have been singing together since they met in the 1970s as students at St MacNissi’s College, County Antrim, and immediately realised their musical prowess as a singing trio.

Welcoming the exciting news parish priest Fr Declan Boland explained, “Having The Priests perform in the Church of the Immaculate Conception really is a dream come true.

“We have already held a number of fund-raising events throughout the past year but to have The Priests come to our small parish is something extra special.

“During one of our fund-raising committee meetings someone suggested The Priests in concert, however I never dreamt we could actually bring them on board – but thanks to the help of two local men Joe Gallagher and John McGuinness, The Priests are booked and we can’t wait to welcome them to our parish.”

A major fund-raising drive for the well-loved Church got underway late last year and to date £60,000 of the £100,000 restoration target has been reached.

Thanking the entire community for their generosity Fr Boland added, “I am overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our people. We are a small parish but since this restoration fund got underway last September there has been a wave of support from the entire community.

“Recently we held the Festival of Music inside the Church and it was a spectacular evening.

“The Church building blends itself musically and spiritually and provides a beautiful tonal quality for any concert.

“Our fund-raising drive has surpassed our wildest dreams and I can only emphasis again my gratitude to the people of Strabane. The restoration fund has really ignited the sense of family and community within our parish and I have full confidence in reaching our £100,000 target. I invite everyone to come along in September and enjoy this magical and spiritual evening of music,” he added.

• The Priests will be performing at the Church of Immaculate Conception on Thursday, September 28. Tickets cost £25 and are on sale  from various outlets throughout the town.
