BOY-RACERS are once again making a nuisance of themselves at the Canal Basin in Strabane.
Congregating in large numbers, racing cars and screeching tyres late at night, the car enthusiasts’ behaviour has drawn criticism from local MLA, Michaela Boyle.
However this isn’t the first time boy-racers have tortured residents on Dock Street. Back in 2013 one local resident told this newspaper that he was being tortured “day after day” by a minority of boy-racers revving past his house during the night.
At the time, the PSNI confirmed that patrols had been increased in the area and anyone caught in the act would have their cars seized.
This week, Michaela Boyle urged those involved in this latest anti-social behaviour to “wise up”.
“I have received numerous complaints from local residents about the screeching of tyres late at night and large crowds congregating in cars to race,” she said.
“This reckless behaviour is waking young children and elderly out of their sleep in the middle of the night and is occurring on a regular basis. On Monday alone this went on until 3.30am.
“I am calling on those responsible to stop and actually think of what they are doing to these families. Children have also been witnessed videoing these cars in the evenings doing doughnuts and racing which is a major health and safety concern.
“I have been in contact with the council and have asked them to consider erecting a barrier to block cars from entering which they are going to discuss.
“I am also meeting with the PSNI this Friday and will be raising this issue with them.
“My advice to those involved is that it’s time to wise up and stop tormenting these families with this childish behaviour immediately.”
