Councillor recuperating in hospital after work accident

CASTLEDERG councillor, Kieran McGuire remains in hospital this week following a workplace accident involving a forklift.

It is understood the accident took place on Thursday of last week whereupon the Sinn Féin representative suffered a broken ankle and fibula as well as cuts and bruising.


After being rushed to hospital, Cllr McGuire then underwent surgery on Thursday before being installed at the intensive care unit in Altnagelvin Hospital.

“I think everything went OK,” party colleague, Declan McAleer said. “I was just back from my holidays when I got a message to say what had happened.

“I know he was in pain but I text him and he text me back, so I think he is on the mend.”

A full time councillor at Derry City and Strabane District Council, it is understood that Kieran McGuire has a background in engineering.

West Tyrone MP, Barry McElduff also offered his best wishes to Cllr McGuire on social media.

He said, “Shocked to learn of Kieran McGuire’s accident and hospitalisation.

“Best wishes to Kieran who is a great family man, a  hard working councillor and a proud Aghyaran gael.”
