Prominent republican passes away

Kevin Murray.

PROMINENT Strabane republican Kevin Murray has died.

Kevin Murray (47) had been diagnosed with rapidly deteriorating and terminal motor neurone disease and died late last night (Wednesday) at his home in Townsend Street.

Mr Murray was fighting extradition over his alleged role in the murder of David Byrne who was shot dead at Dublin’s Regency Hotel in February of last year. The murder ignited a deadly feud between members of the rival Kinahan and Hutch gangs.

Mr Murray was detained last September under a European Arrest Warrant issued by authorities in Republic, but due to his deteriorating health he was never extradited to stand trial.

His funeral will take place on Saturday  at 10am in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Interment afterwards in Strabane Cemetery.
