CAPTAIN Fantastic Kendra McMullan inspired Sion Swifts Ladies to their first ever Electric Ireland Women’s Challenge Cup triumph at the National Stadium this evening.

McMullan netted twice in three second half minutes, the first a thumping 25-yard volley over the keeper, the second a low drive into the corner of the net as Sion deservedly defeated Newry City Ladies.

The victory was the fairytale end to a memorable season in which the North Tyrone outfit finished runners-up in the Women’s Premiership.

Sion were by some distance the better team in the first half with Kelly Crompton having a glancing header cleared off the line just six minutes in.

Skipper McMullan, Tyler Toland, Chloe McGlade and Crompton were stamping their authority on proceedings early doors as Claragh Connor sent a rising shot over Megan Cinnamond’s crossbar.

McMullan did likewise following good play by Geny Decker before an excellent last-ditch tackle by Connor at the other end denied Aimee Mackin a clear run on goal.

Thereafter Newry established a foothold with Moya Feehan heading wide before the North Tyrone outfit finished the opening 45 minutes with a flourish.

Twice in quick succession McGlade tested Cinnamond, who in between smothered an effort by Orla Devenney after a mix up in the Newry rearguard.

McGlade was also prominent in the opening exchanges of the second half, the Drumquin woman curling a free kick inches wide before the striker was beaten to a Toland pass by Cinnamond.

By now Sion had become the dominant force and when the ball broke to McMullan on 73 minutes the Sion skipper sent an arching shot over the head of the Newry keeper.

Three minutes later the Sion celebrations were already well under way when McMullan fired the ball into the corner of the net after good play by McGlade.
