A Strabane woman is set to head up her own science-based show on Radio Ulster.
Emer Maguire, who is a previous winner of Famelab and who recently released her debut album, will kick off her new show, ‘New Voices with Emer Maguire’ tonight (October 3) between 10-11pm.
Featuring themes as interesting and diverse as the science behind a time machine, Ireland’s first person in space and the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse, Emer is hoping the experience turns out to be plenty of fun.
“It’s a science and technology show,” she explained. “It’s called Science and Stuff with Emer Maguire’.
“It all came about because I was doing a bit of science education. I had entered Famelab a couple of years ago and I suppose it all stemmed from there.”
Back in June of this year Emer also entered and won another Famelab contest, this time an international competition in Kazakhstan.
Famelab is the world’s leading science communication competition. Participants have just three minutes to win over the judges and crowd with a scientific talk that excels for its content, clarity and charisma.
“I won that and then the radio show came on the back of it,” Emer continued.
“The show is going to have more of a magazine format. We have lots of different topics and we have interviewed some really cool people already, like the woman who wants to become Ireland’s first person in space and a man who has studied what might happen if there was a zombie apocalypse.
“It isn’t a show for scientists but for the general public and hopefully, it’s going to be a bit of craic too.”
• Science and Stuff with Emer Maguire starts on Radio Ulster on Tuesday October 3 from 10pm. It will also be available as a podcast.
