Council agrees to lock car park overnight

Cllr Patsy Kelly at Dock Street car park.

DOCK Street car park will soon be locked up overnight, aftter a motion to restrict opening hours was passed at a council meeting this week.

The development came about following a slew of anti-social behaviour in the area in recent years, with boy-racers racing cars late at night.
A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council said, “As a result of concerns raised about anti-social behaviour, elected members have approved a recommendation to install a barrier system at Dock Street car park.

“Council officers are currently working on the logistics of installing the barrier and allocating staff responsibility for its operation and maintenance. It is expected that this process will be completed in the coming weeks.”

Welcoming the news independent councillor Patsy Kelly says he hopes by closing the car park at night it will deter further disruption. The car park will be closed from 6.30pm-8am.

“By restricting access to the car park at night this will stop boy-racers from using the area as a race track,” he said.

“I am also currently in talks with the Roads Services to address the possibility of introducing speed ramps on Dock Street. There can be quite a high volume of traffic in this part of the town and I would think that by putting speed reducing measures in place this would keep the area safer for the general public.”

Cllr Kelly added that the council will work closely with local businesses and address the possibility of opening the car park on occasions when there is a need for the facility.
