Sion Ladies players savouring national team success

Tyler Toland, centre, helped Republic of Ireland to draw with European champions Netherlands

TWO Sion Swifts Ladies players are today savouring stunning results for their respective national teams in World Cup Qualifying games.

Last evening, and in front of 12, 000 strong crowd, in Nijmegen the Republic of Ireland  held European champions the Netherlands to a scoreless draw.

As expected the Dutch dominated the game but Colin Bell’s Irish team defended superbly with Sion Swifts gifted midfielder Tyler Toland making a telling contribution. Twice Holland appeared to have breached the Ireland rearguard but on both occasions the talented 16-year-old got back to hoof the ball off the line.

Toland’s Sion team-mate Cathy Hyndman was in the Northern Ireland squad which picked up their first qualifying points with a 3-1 victory over Slovakia in Zilina.

Goals by Julie Nelson, Rachel Furness and Caragh Milligan sealed an impressive win to lift Alfie Wylie’s team up to fourth in the group.
