Parents, pupils and staff at the Gaelscoil have adopted the spirit of giving with a generous winter foodbank.
Following an appeal aimed at pupils and parents, Gaelscoil Uí Dhochartaigh will donate over 20 packed crates of festive foodstuffs and other essentials to Strabane Foodbank, which will be used to help those less fortunate in the local area. According to classroom assistant Brian McMahon, the appeal has generated an “overwhelming” response.
“The project has received heart-warming support,” he said. “In previous years generous parents would give teachers and staff Christmas gifts, although it was clear there were others in society who needed them more. We decided to ask for food items instead that we could donate.
Undoubtedly, parents have gone above and beyond what we originally anticipated.”
With Christmas just around the corner, Brian is glad that the spirit of giving is alive and well in the Strabane community.
“Instances like this really hammer home just how generous and giving people in Strabane are,” he said. “The community is keen to help those who have less. In this day and age, it is astounding people are still stricken by poverty. Christmas can be an especially hard time for families living in poverty.
“I feel this is the true meaning of Christmas – giving instead of receiving, and helping those less fortunate.” Brian concluded.
