AN Easter Monday fund-raising event is being organised to help a squad of athletes on the road to the Special Olympics Games in Abu Dhabi next year.
Organised by Strabane and District Special Olympics, the fantastic Lee Matthews and his band will provide entertainment at the event and unveil a phenomenal new single on the night.
The funds raised will go toward supporting local athletes attend the all-Ireland special Olympics in June, and if successful, the dizzying heights of Abu Dhabi in 2019.
According to Strabane Special Olympics medical officer Sandra Friel, this is a phenomenal opportunity for all involved.
“We have some very talented basketball players, footballers, kayakers and athletes aiming for the top,” she said.
“However, their pursuit of Olympic greatness is dependent on fundraising. We need sponsorship for some 16 athletes and seven qualified coaches to attend the All-Ireland games. We are hoping to send the same amount to Abu Dhabi.
“We are calling on the support of the local community. The Special Olympics Strabane and District enriches the lives of adults and children with an intellectual disability and gives them opportunities to demonstrate courage, experience joy and develop skills. We encourage everyone to come along for a night of fun at the Fir Trees so we can help our athletes on their way to the World Games!”
The fundraising event will take place at the Fir Trees Hotel, Strabane on Easter Monday April 2, with tickets priced at £10 and doors opening at 9.30pm.
