A LOCAL weightlifting powerhouse has his sights very firmly set on becoming the World’s Strongest Man
Strabane man Mark Burke’s weightlifting talent is fast earning him world-wide acclaim, and having recently been crowned Ireland’s Strongest Man (weighing under 80kg) he is now hoping to take the World title in December.
Mark will embark on a vigorous training regime until Christmas when he will jet off to showcase his deadlifting prowess in America. Until then he plans to continue his tried and tested formula of structured workouts.
“It is all systems go from now until December,” he said. “Coming out top in my category in Ireland’s Strongest Man was a lot of work and required commitment seven days per week. It was worth it, however, as I now hold the current Irish deadlifting record.”
While Mark feels his latest competition will be a challenge, he is confident he has the ability to impress.
“I have very good strength and I hope to break a World record in the future. I am probably one of the best deadlifters out there and I will give the competition my all. Here’s hoping training goes well from now until then.”
Starting from humble beginnings in Strabane, Mark credits Peak Performance Gym as being crucial in helping him realise his potential.
“Peak Performance have been extremely helpful and have professional equipment to help me train. I am very grateful for everything the gym has done for me.
“In terms of budding deadlifters, my advice is simply don’t be afraid to lift weights. Seek proper advice and don’t underestimate yourself. It’s all about commitment and structured workouts.
“Personally I never thought I’d get this far, but it’s amazing what commitment can do.”
