STRABANE Lifford Cycling Club hosted their first event of the 2013 season with a 18 mile road race held in Strabane.
Fifty cyclists from the local SLCC club and neighbouring cycling clubs took part in the race.
The race pace was frantic from the start with the first two groups on the road riding hard to stay clear of the pursuing scratch bunch.
It was riders from the middle bunch who caught the front group and stayed clear of the scratch group to battle it out for the top placings on the night. With several miles to go an elite group of three riders broke clear at the front and it was these riders that contested the finish.
In the final sprint to the line it was Strabane Lifford rider Kieran Porter who took the chequered flag to claim victory over his team mate Donal Burns. Omagh Wheelers rider Caolan Dolan claimed third. The next group of riders to finish was led home by Strabane Lifford rider Vincent McCarron with Alan Lyttle making up the top 5.
This race was the first in a series of nine events that will be run throughout the coming months to decide who will be crowned SLCC Racing League champion in 2013. The club would like to thank all race marshals and the local PSNI who ensured the race was run safely.
