STUDENTS of Strabane Shotokan Karate Club took to the mats on Monday evening in the hope of moving up the belt rankings.

A total of 35 students were put through their paces, with 6th dan senior instructor, sensei Matthew Price, conducting the course and grading.

Watching on nervously was Shotokan Club chief Simon O’Dowd.

Sensei O’Dowd said, “Sensei Price said he was impressed by the high technical standard of the Strabane students as well as the attitude displayed.

“Several students achieved brown belts including Ansuiya Sengupta, Shaun Gallagher, Jack Donaghey and Ruben Dunbar.

“Also of note were the brown and black belts attained by Mark McAneny, Ellie Boggs and Sharah McGarrigle.

“This is the last grading before these students begin their training towards black belt status and they were each given suggestions and recommendations to help them in their preparation.”
