McLaughlin records win for Ireland

STRABANE man Cathal McLaughlin defeated England’s Bradley Perkins on Friday night when the 18-year-old represented Ireland in an international tournament.
McLaughlin boxes out of Raphoe ABC and traveled as part of the Donegal team that was representing Ireland.
The 10-man squad took on England in front of a capacity crowd of over 500 at the Tenbury High Ormiston Academy in Tenbury Wells, near Birmingham.
The on-fire McLaughlin, from The Orchard, is now unbeaten in his last nine contests and was the deserving winner against Perkins.
McLaughlin began with a pair of left handers, both sent around the house to the target.
McLaughlin landed a brilliant right to Perkins’ head at the close of the first stanza, but Perkins upped the ante in the second round.
It was all to play for in the final round, but it was McLaughlin who made his mark when he unloaded his gunfire with one stinging right hand seeing Perkins momentarily stunned.
The former Lisnafin ABC man has won a Nine Counties title previously and is a triple Ulster finalist.
McLaughlin was one of three winners from the visiting team with Convoy’s Bryan McNamee and Lifford man Ronnie Brennan – also a Raphoe ABC boxer – recording wins. Brennan recorded a 3-0 win over James Ryan in the penultimate bout of the night.
Strabane native and Convoy ABC head coach Dominic McCafferty was one of the coaches with the team that travelled.
