Sproule hoping to kick-start campaign with derby win

ARDSTRAW and Strabane Athletic warmed up for Saturday’s Northern Ireland Intermediate League derby clash between the sides with contrasting results, but both produced good performances which should lead to an entertaining clash at Spamount this coming weekend.


Strabane thumped Trojans 4-0, thanks to a Conor Carlin wonder strike and goals from Aaron Porter, Gary Henderson and Mickey Logue, while Ivan Sproule’s men fell to a 2-1 home reverse to title-favourites, Maiden City, as Darren Boyd’s goal was cancelled out by strikes from Ward and Deane.

Despite the reverse, Sproule believes the improved performance from his side will stand them in good stead for Saturday’s derby encounter:

“We have started with Trojans, Maiden City and now Strabane on Saturday, probably three of the top teams,” said the ex-Hibs and Bristol City star.

“If we can carry our form from last Saturday into this weekend then we’re in with a shout.

“We’ll be going their looking for the win to try and kick-start our league campaign.”
