RAPHOE siblings, Sam and Chloe Magee capped a hugely successful 2017 by being named players of the year at Badminton Ireland’s annual awards night in Dublin.

During the year the brother and sister won a European bronze medal, a German League title and the Spanish Open crown, and reached the last-16 of the World Championships in Glasgow.

The award was in recognition of those successes, which came during a ‘purple patch’ of form between April and June and although their season ended somewhat disappointingly with a final defeat in the Irish Open on Friday, they are looking forward to even greater achievements in 2018.

“Overall it’s been a fantastic year, with the bronze medal at the Europeans being the highlight,” acknowledged 27-year-old Sam.

“We’ve had some top results at some top tournaments, a real pruple patch between April and June, which we would have taken at the start of the year,” he observed.

“Next year we’ll be looking for more consistency and we’ll be hoping to get some big results to push our ranking on a bit.

“We’ll take a step back for a couple of weeks over Christmas and then have a month of real hard training in January to make sure we’re ready.”
