Pensioner robbed as she waited on a bus

The robbery took place at Strabane bus station.

A HEARTLESS thief who robbed a Strabane pensioner ordered a taxi to make her escape from the scene of the crime.

Betty Blakely was left badly shaken when a sly thief made off with her purse as she waited for a bus at Strabane bus station.

According to the 74-year-old, the incident took her completely by surprise.

“It happened on March 28,” she explained. “I was sitting at the bus station with a few friends, with my bag beside me. A woman proceeded to sit down next to me but gave me a jolt as she sat down. I thought it was an accident and she apologised, but this must have been when she got the purse. I didn’t know it was stolen until I got on the bus.”

A total of £65 cash, a debit card, credit cards and an assortment of coins were contained within the purse, which the thief used to fund a spending spree shortly after the incident.

“The thief started spending money all around. There are transactions recorded at the chemist, Dolan’s and the woman even ordered a taxi from the bus station. Several transactions were also recorded on a contactless credit card around shops in Letterkenny.”

With the perpetrator caught on CCTV Betty is confident justice will be served.

However, she feels the incident is both very distressing and eye opening.

“It has caused much distress, and it just goes to show that people can be very clever and cunning and there are thieves out there who do this frequently.

“I am calling on people around Strabane to be careful. The atmosphere at the bus station was very relaxed and I didn’t think there was any threat, but little did I know my day out would soon turn into a nightmare.”
