A PUBLIC protest is to be held next week in Strabane to highlight the “ongoing killing of innocent Palestinians.”

Organised by local man Ciaran Boyle, the ‘Protesting Apartheid Israel’ event will take place tomorrow (Saturday, April 14) and already it is being anticipated that hundreds of people could take part.

Beginning on Bradley Way, it is envisaged that people will link arms to make a human chain, before making their way around to Strabane Bridge before finishing up at the Gaza mural at Townsend Street.

“For years and years, I have been shouting from the rooftops about what Israel is doing to the Palestinians,” Ciaran Boyle said this week. “But it’s got to the stage that I felt I needed to do something myself. What we’re doing here is not letting things go, without making this protest.”

Mr Boyle is referring to the escalating violence at the weekend along the Gaza-Israel border. To date, according to Palestinian officials, some 17 people have been killed and hundreds injured after thousands marched to the border as part of a six-week protest, dubbed the Great March of Return.

UN Security Council members have called for an investigation into the violence.
Friday (March 30) marked Land Day, which commemorates the killing of six protesters by Israeli security forces during demonstrations over land confiscation in 1976. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are understood to have been displaced during the conflict which surrounded the creation of Israel in 1948.

“A lot of the media seems to be turning a blind eye to the killing,” Mr Boyle continued. “So another thing we want to do on the day (Saturday, April 14) is organise a live feed for Facebook. We need to protest because others won’t.

“So far 17 people have been killed, one of them was a child. Is this going to continue – ongoing killing of innocent Palestinians – until Gaza is completely gone?

“People will criticise me for this but I don’t care. I can’t forget about this – it’s a human rights violation.

“At the minute we’re trying to get as much support as we can and already, we’re getting a lot of support on Facebook.”
