HAVING been out of the game for almost 15 years, Shaun McGarrigle (12) made a speedy return to the winner’s rostrum in the McHughs Oil Open stableford, returning a best of the day 40pts thanks to a very strong inward nine where he chalked up seven pars and 22pts.
He got the verdict in front of no fewer than five golfers who had all recorded 39pts earlier in the day in what must be said were tough conditions with the strong southerly breeze prevailing throughout.
The runner-up in the aforementioned congested leaderboard was James McGhee (15), a young player who has featured regularly in recent weeks and definitely one to watch as his improvement continues. In third position came Gerard Walsh (16), with Enda McDonnell (23) in fourth place and Stephen Alexander (18) fifth, all with the same total of 39pts.
The gross prize went to Ryan McGowan (5) with 32 gross points, the front nine went to Anthony Brennan (18) with 21 pts to the turn with Brian Forrester (16) taking the back nine with 22pts.
Congratulations to David Mullen who recorded his first hole in one on Saturday when he holed his tee-shot at the par three- second hole.
There was an excellent turnout of over 100 players for last Thursday’s competition sponsored by Charles Breslin of ‘Charlies Bar’ Strabane.
The winner was Keith Patterson (8) with a fine three over par total of 41 pts in the breezy conditions.
The runner-up was Ryan Patton (18) with 40 pts and Paul O’Reilly (6) was next with his third consecutive 39pts. Enda Kennedy (scr) was the gross winner with a level par 36 pts.
Category one golfers were prominent in the ladies competition last Tuesday, the Marie Curie Cancer Care event. The winner was Jennifer Rouse (8) with an excellent 40 pts, which was just four over par on the day!
The category one winner was Bernie O’Kane (20) with 37 pts with Olive Reid (31) the winner in category two with 36pts.
The winners of last week’s mixed foursomes, played over 13 holes, were Bernie O’Kane and Liam McGinley with 25pts. The runners-up were Debbie McDaid and Stephen Kennedy, also with 25 pts.
No joy for our mixed foursomes team however at Killymoon GC on Sunday in the regional qualifying tournament where they failed to qualify for the matchplay stages. Although missing out very narrowly in the end up, it’s fair to say it was an uncharacteristicly poor outing from a very strong side.
Better news for Pat Corry’s JB Carr team, who are through to the next stage after a narrow win over Castlehume GC on Wednesday last. Leading 4-1 from the home leg, Strabane got through by the narrowest of margins, securing the second match they needed at the first tie hole when team captain and George McCay won their match, after Francie Devine and Brian Forrester had won their tie at the 18th hole.
Fixtures: Today (Sunday), Societies, including Dixies Bar, Tommy Falconer Memorial (11-2pm); Monday, Declan Devine Frozen Foods Bank Holiday Open; Tuesday, O2 Challenge Ladies.
