Holy Cross College’s performing arts students will once again tread the boards later this month when they take to the stage for a new production of the iconic musical, Jesus Christ Superstar.
Running from November 19 until 24 at St Patrick’s Hall in Strabane, the show has a cast of some 70 performers, all of whom have been working tirelessly these past few months to bring the musical to fruition.
A veritable musical phenomenon with a world-wide fan base, Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical actually started as a rock opera concept album before its Broadway debut in 1971.
“It’s a modern-day version of Jesus Christ Superstar, so a lot of the news is based on current affairs,” director, Leah McCay explained this week.
“We’ve been working on this since June. Jenny Stewart is the musical director and Emmet Stewart is choreographer – he’s a past pupil at Holy Cross – and it’s something we wanted to do for some time but this year we realised we have the talent.
“We’re so blessed with the talent we have in the school at the minute. It’s amazing.”
A huge screen will provide the backdrop for the show with, according to Ms McCay, the bulk of the set being done by projection.
The show itself is set against an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’, ‘Gethsemane’ and ‘Superstar’.
“It’s a brilliant show,” Ms McCay continued. “We’ve a cast of 70 and they’re all really enjoying it.
“We have three leads, Jamie-Lee Gallagher as Jesus, Cahir O’Neill as Judas and Darci Wilders as Mary Magdalene – they’re no strangers to the stage.”
She added, “Going by the successes of previous productions, we would anticipate that it’ll be a sell-out run. Friday and Saturday nights’ performances are sold out already. It’s going to be phenomenal.”
