‘THE Night the Pirates Came to Sion Mills,’ is the quirky title of the new children’s Christmas tale, by Sion Mills author, Angela McBride.
Launched in recent days the book, which is also illustrated by Angela, tells the story of Santa and Rudolph, who arrive in the historic, picturesque village on Christmas Eve to deliver presents.
Rudolph decides to wonder off to Herdman’s Mill where he is captured by pirates.
But do not fear, Santa soon comes to the rescue and it all ends happily ever after with Santa, Rudolph, and the pirates partying Christmas away together.
Speaking after the local launch Angela explains how Sion Mills inspires her to write.
“I am originally from Scotland but I have been living in Sion Mills for almost ten years,” she said.
“I never planned on moving to Sion however, I fell head over heels in love with it after I was employed to draw up a map of it, for the Sion Mills Preservation Trust. It is very similar to the village I lived in, in Scotland, small and friendly.
“One day I was walking Sion Mills, I spotted this beautiful house for sale and I said I would love to live there, so I bought it and the rest as they say, is history.”
Speaking of history, Angela added that it is the village historic past which she loves the most.
“This place is steeped in history; it is everywhere and I wanted to incorporate that in my story. In a fun and easy way, I can educate children about where they come from.
It is about creating a local interest and allowing the children to read the story and say, ‘yeah I know that place, this is where I live’.”
Seventy copies of the book have been printed and most of these were sold at the launch. However digital
copies are still available to purchase on Amazon.
Thanking all the people of Sion Mills for their support in her recent literary adventure Angela says she hopes to continue writing and illustrating children’s stories in the future and intends on keeping local areas as her main themes and inspiration.
