GOALS from Josh Gallagher and Adam Duffy booked Holy Cross College’s Year 10 boys’ team’s place in the NI Schools’ Cup final.
The team overcame St Mary’s CBS, Belfast, 2-1 in Friday’s last four encounter to set up a decider in May against either St Columb’s, Derry, or St Pat’s, Lisburn.
Stephen Donaghey’s charges reached the semi-finals by ousting Cullybackey, Omagh CBS and Rathmore, Belfast, before accounting for St Mary’s at the end of last week.
Played in blustery conditions, the Holy Cross lads took the lead through Gallagher’s strike, but even though their opponents had a man sent off, they were unable to add to their tally.
After the restart, St Mary’s attempted to make the most of having the wind at their backs and they duly equalised from the spot.
However, Holy Cross responded well with Duffy firing them back into the lead and although further chances came and went, the Strabane lads never looked in danger of being denied.
The school is hopeful that the Year 10 boys aren’t the only side in a final come the end of the year, as the senior and junior girls both face St Joseph’s Belfast in their respective semi-finals. Dates to be confirmed.
