A STRABANE man studying in Los Angeles has described as “exciting” the buzz around Hollywood on Oscars day.
Michael Lafferty, who recently enrolled at the New York Film Academy in LA, took a break from studying to visit the Hollywood sign on Sunday past and soak up the atmosphere.
He previously said it was “a dream” and “an amazing opportunity” to be able to study at the world-renowned academy.
“I was up at the Hollywood sign on the day of the Oscars and you could tell there was a bit of a buzz, the place was a bit busy,” he said.
“There were helicopters and blimps being flown over Hollywood in the distance – it’s clearly a big day in Hollywood’s calendar. The mood was exciting!”
On Sunday night British actress Olivia Colman defied the odds to scoop an Oscar for her role in The Favourite. Green Book also sprang a surprise by winning the award for best film.
Bohemian Rhapsody won the most awards in total with four, while Roma and Black Panther also won three each.
In terms of the winners, Michael largely agreed with the Academy.
“I was shocked at Green Book winning best picture but I was happy for it too,” Michael continued. “It was the last film I got to see before the Oscars and I really liked it – I liked it more than Roma.
“Roma is a well directed film and it was beautifully shot. The cinematography was incredible so for it to win in those categories was also well deserved.
“I really liked the Queen bipoic Bohemian Rhapsody and I was pleased to see it do well and was delighted that Rami Malek won the Oscar for best actor – he was my top choice for that award.
“I gambled on the wrong actress to win best actress, I was rooting for Yalitza Aparacio and it was Olivia Colman; I’ve yet to see The Favourite though.
“Spiderman into the Spiderverse was one of my favourite films from last year and it was my top choice for best animated film, for me, there was no other contender.”
